Siemens Answers the renewable energy problem of Samso Islands
Samso had a dream to build an island that was independent of fossil fuels after they won the government renewable energy community pioneer in the year 1977. They made a plan to make the island 75% energy independent in 10 years and outperformed by making the island 100% energy independent in just 10 years. Siemens provided Samso with 21 wind turbines and also helped service these turbines which has helped Samso become an energy independent island in just a span of 10 years.
out of the 21 wind turbine plants that Siemens has supplied, 11 of them are 1MW on shore wind turbines and 10 of them are 2.3MW off shore wind turbines. both these unit produce 28,000 MWh and 77,500 MwH of electricity respectively each year. this is enough energy to supply to the entire island and also a little extra to help them sell the electricity.
“the technology is all there but all of us have to act” – these are the lines from a farmer from the Samso island and it’s because of such positive thinking of these residents in the island that they are now 100% self sufficient with wind generated electricity. this renewable energy initiative taken up by samso with the help of Siemens not just answers the problem of an exhausting natural resource but also helps build a pay it forward nation.
